Ciguatera Fish Poisoning, also known simply as ciguatera, is a food borne illness caused by eating reef fish whose flesh is contaminated with certain toxins.(1)
Where it's from
It occurs most commonly in the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. And it originates from dinoflagellates called Gamberdiscus toxicus. Why is it more of an issue now? Because dinoflagellates are getting less of their necessary natural minerals, and they are having to substitute with other things like toxic waste, like phosphate and nitrate rich fertilizers.
What harm does it do?
The Ciguatera poisoning stops your nervous system from functioning, this gives Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or a red itchy skin rash Chills, hot and cold temperature reversal, blurred vision, abnormal sensitivity to light. And all of that can last for as long as 20 years.

Use reef safe products and pick up as much trash as you can. And you can also make less trash for example drinking out of reusable water bottles or increasing demand for organically grown foods.
